Paul Smith- Author of the Month

Paul Smith, BScN, is a Canadian author whose stories are shaped by resilience, compassion, and a profound understanding of the human experience. Born in British Columbia and now living in Newfoundland and Labrador, he draws inspiration from both the rugged Canadian landscape and his own remarkable life journey.

Before becoming a full-time writer, Paul worked as an Intensive Care Unit Registered Nurse after earning his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Vancouver Island University. His career in critical care exposed him to both the fragility and strength of the human spirit. Following his early retirement due to moderate-to-severe PTSD, Paul discovered writing as a powerful therapeutic outlet—one that transformed personal healing into a creative calling.

Today, Paul writes with his left hand and an unwavering passion for storytelling, crafting children’s, middle-grade, young adult, and adult fiction that explores courage, empathy, perseverance, and hope. His growing body of work includes the acclaimed animal-centered adventures Rhino, Guardians of the Silverback, and Ivory, as well as the powerful historical novel The Women of Ravensbrück.

A dedicated advocate for mental health awareness, Paul believes stories can offer comfort, understanding, and recovery. When he’s not writing, he enjoys spending time with Lily, his beloved Yorkshire Terrier, who is often nearby as his trusted writing companion.

Through every book he creates, Paul invites readers into worlds where resilience triumphs over adversity and where even the most difficult journeys can lead to hope.
